Coming up next in our speaker series we have Margret MacDonald with a talk on helping your children understand sustainability and use of resources. Margaret is an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University whose research interests include Intergenerational Programs, Pedagogical Documentation, and Curriculum Development in early childhood education. As part of her research she has explored the use of engaged philosophical inquiry with young children (3-5) to discuss aspects of sustainability.
Helping Children Understand Sustainability, Ownership and Use of Resources
In this 1.5 hour talk Margaret will focus on her use of engaged philosophical inquiry and discussions with young children about the forest, ownership and belonging. This talk will include a 10 minute pedagogical documentary style video that will give the parents a sense of the discussion strategies used by Warren Bowen, a colleague and ‘Philosopher in Residence’ at the UniverCity Childcare Centre on SFU campus. The video will be followed by some findings and implications for teachers and parents related to young children’s understanding of ownership and use of resources.
Tickets are $10 (includes refreshments) and can be purchased via eventbrite or at the door on the evening of the event. Hope to see you there!
